Course Outline:
This course will specifically assist the exploration geophysicist in developing models to fit seismic data. In general, this course describes the exploration geophysicist's chief function which is to describe the earth by the use of geophysical data sets. Geophysical inversion and imaging can turn observations into geologic models. This course outlines the theory and practice behind geophysical inversion and imaging, and it demonstrates applications by showing examples of how theory relates to various kinds of data.
The course shows how inversion methods can be used to obtain seismic velocity information and how this information can be used in imaging procedures such as depth migration. We provide a description of prestack depth migration and its application to the imaging of complex foothills geology in Western Canada. There are discussions of anisotropic depth migration methods, velocity analysis, and numerous case histories.
Emphasis is placed on the integration of methods which provide enhanced definition of petroleum reservoirs. Course participants are encouraged to bring data examples for class discussions.
